In the time table issued by j the At? antic Coast Line, as spoken -of by OS yesterday, there is an excellent map, of the various States throuzh which the t no passes, as also ot the adjoining: States. Florida, in especial, has an en larged space, and the map of this State is probably just as good a oho as that furnished by Cotton's pocket edition". It! is not generally known, by the wiy. that the Atlantic Coast Line, between New York and New Orleans. is seven hours shorter than any other route. M Ktectra" We have received the December number of the above-named Magazine, which is published by Miss Isabella M. Ley burn, at Louisville, Ky. It is in tended a3 a "Belle Letter Monthly for Young People." and its matter is such as to Subserve that purpose. The articles are interesting, entertatninz and instructive and many of them of a high order of. literary merit. Misses Annie Wilson and Isabella M. Leyburn are the editors. The subscription price is $2 per annum. Single copies 20 cents each. i A False Alarm. Pas3ers-by saw dense volumes of smoke issuing from St. John's Church, at aj little after noon to-day, and promptly gave the alarm , of fire. It was a false alarm, however, as the smoke issued from a pipe and was car ried by currents of air in such a manner as to almost completely envelope the building. It appeared ior a short time as it the church was all on fire in the interior and only gathering strength to burst through and work its destructian, but it was all smoke. The fire depart ment-was promptly on hand, but there was no use for its services. The Argentine Republic Our thanks are due to Col. George Harriss. Vice Counsul of tho Argentine Republic, for a copy of an official pub lication entitled. "The Argentine Re public as a field for European Emi gration." It is a valuable work, oontaming much important information as to the climate, productions, industries and laws of the country, together with . . a tne wages paia to xaoorers ana me chanics, and the religious and educa tlonal advantages . afforded. A large and complete map of the Republic is appended, but. unfortunately for the general American reader, its explana tions and names are in the Spanish lan guage. i Theodore Thomas. -Mr. Sevmour Locke arrived in the city last night and had a consultation with the manager of the Opera House regarding the appearance of the Thomas Orchestra in this city, on the 6th of. Des cember next. It was concluded to push the matter and spare no paius to get them here if possible. Mr. Locke left a littlb after midnight to join the troupe at Lynchburg, Va., and. Mr. Dyer went North this morning in the interest of the proposed concert. There is now but-little doubt that they' ..will come, by which means the music lov- ing people of Wilmington will haye. an opportunity of hearing the largest and undoubtedly the best traveling orches tra in the world. I Criminal Court. In the case of Edward McCabe, charged with perjury, which was on trial before this' tribunal, when our re port closed yesterday, the juryreturned a verdict of not guiity. Among the few timeshonorcd customs that have not been swept away by the crue hand of war, is that of the gather ing'of invited guests at wedding par ties, there to remain all night, and until after breakfast on tho next morn ing, passing the hours in social pleasures and becoming festivities This custom, we are glad to say, prevails iu many, localities, and we hope it may continue. A few evenings since there was one of these pleasant gatherings at tho resi dence of Capt. G. F- Walker, in Pender county, to witness the mirriage of his daughter, Miss Theodosia, tcMr. W. D. King, of Sampson county. The ceremony was pertormed by Rey. J. S. BJack apd was .witnessed by a large parfy, of invited guests. A among whom were representatives b(Juplin.Samp- son.New Hanover and Pender counties! The attendants upon the happy couple. were Mr. James H. Colvin.wit,h Miss Lillian Moore; Mr. Alonzo D, Currie, with Mi3s Mary j Bordeaux; Mr. Edgar A. Moore, with Miss Mollie Currie; Mr. Willie A. Bordeaux, with Miss Mollie Murphy ; Mr. All m and Barbery with Miss Lizzie Walker, and Mr. Lec Walker, jwith Miss Ilettie Moore. After the wedding ceremony the hap py party sat down, to a splendid supper prepared for the occasiqn. at which all did ample justice to the delicate viands spread before them. The appetite being satisfied dancing came next in order. which was kept up by some until sun rise next morning, while others, after a season of enjoyment, sought the repose and refreshment of sleep. Messrs. M. Peterson, Haywood Pe terson, and John C. Broadhurst, Jr , and Mrs. Julia King were assigned the duty of the reception and care of the guests, and were entirely successful in their efforts. The best of order and eenial eood humor prevailed. Therw was not a drop of intoxicating liquor furnished or drank, and the guests re turned to their respective homes bear ing the most pleasant memories of the happy occasion with its many pleasing incidents.
